Elmhurst, 17 miles from the Loop, is an attractive, established community, with a perfect mixture of commerce and quiet suburban living.
Recognized as a Tree City, U.S.A., Elmhurst was the 14th community in the state to be named an Illinois Certified City and the first in DuPage County.
The community has three industrial parks, housing more than 1,900 businesses, and is home to a variety of cultural facilities that provide family entertainment.
The Lizzardo Museum of Lapidary Art features fine gems and gemstone carvings dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
The Elmhurst Historical Museum occupies an 1892 mansion built by the city’s first president. Its exhibits include numerous books, photographs, newspapers, clothing, toys and other objects that describe Elmhurst’s rich history.
The Elmwood College Arboretum is an accredited arboretum of woody plants and is registered as a national arboretum. It displays more than 1,000 plants of 270 species and varieties.
Elmhurst has a diverse park district which offers more than 300 programs. It boasts 27 parks and 428 acres of land. A fairly recent addition, Courts Plus, is an award-winning health, sports and fitness center. There are also two outdoor pools, a nine-hole golf course, a shared-use community center, a conservatory and greenhouse and the Abbey Leisure Center for adults over 55. The Barefoot Fun and Fitness Center is an indoor play and gym area for preschoolers.
For nature enthusiasts, walking and hiking are available on the newly developed Elmhurst segment of the Salt Creek Greenway nature trail. Volunteers work on the preservation and restoration of the prairie in cooperation with the park district.
